IEA and FEIAP

IEA (International Engineering Alliance)

(1) Basic Information

It consists of three agreements for accreditation of engineering education (WA; Washington Agreement, SA; Sydney Agreement, DA; Dublin Agreement) and four frameworks for accreditation of engineering professional qualifications (APECEA (APEC Engineers Agreement), IPEA (International Engineers Agreement), IETA (International Technologists Agreement), AIET (International Technologist Agreement). These international agreements govern the recognition of engineering educational qualifications and professional competence.

(2) IPEJ’s membership at IEA

Amongst IEA’s agreements, IPEJ is an authorised member of APECEA and IPEA, respectively. Delegates from Japan attend at annual IEA general assembly to gather updated information about international engineering standards and to feedback them to Japan’s APEC/IPEA Engineer Assessment and Japan’s Professional Engineer Examination.

2. FEIAP (The Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific)

(1) Basic Information

FEIAP was established in 1978 under the auspices of UNESCO as The Federation of Engineering Institutions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (FEISEAP), with the aim of developing engineering technology and academics in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. FEISEAP is an international member of WFEO (World Federation of Engineering Organizations) and is a trade association for engineers in the Asia-Pacific region.

(2) International Exchange Activities of the Institution of Professional Engineers, Japan

FEIAP currently has four standing committees: [1] Natural Disaster Management, [2] Environmental Engineering, [3] Information and Communication Technology, and [4] Engineering Education. Although the decisions of these committees are not expected to have an immediate impact on Japan, the Institution of Professional Engineers, as a regular member, provides continuous support and cooperation to the activities of all the divisions.

In particular, [1] in the area of natural disaster countermeasures, the risk of disasters such as guerrilla rains and floods caused by global warming and other factors has become increasingly serious in recent years, and expectations for Japan's support are growing. The Institution of Professional Engineers, Japan has provided information on Japan's disaster countermeasures and other information in response to the committee's requests, and is also contributing to the support for the preparation of a disaster countermeasures manual, which is currently being compiled.

In [4] engineering education, the JABEE (Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education; Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education) is not participating, and we are collecting information on the new intra-regional educational accreditation system that FEIAP is working on.
