APEC Engineer Registration

Scope of Engineering Disciplines

In Japan, there are currently eleven technical disciplines in the APEC Engineer Register. The scope of engineering disciplines has been expanded from two disciplines namely Civil and Structural Engineering in November, 2000, adding Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering in November 2003, and adding again Geotechnical, Environmental, Industrial, Mining, Information and Bio Engineering in April 2006.

Geotechnical Engineering (from Apr. 2006)
Environmental Engineering (from Apr. 2006)
Mechanical Engineering (from Nov. 2003)
Electrical Engineering (from Nov. 2003)
Industrial Engineering (from Apr. 2006)
Mining Engineering (from Apr. 2006)
Chemical Engineering (from Nov. 2003)
Information Engineering (from Apr. 2006)
Bio Engineering (from Apr. 2006)

Registration

Since the initiation of the registration of APEC Engineers in Nov. 2000, the Japan APEC Engineer Monitoring Committee has carried out the assessment APEC Engineer applicants more than twenty times.

Renewal of Registration

APEC engineer registration is valid for five (5) years. For renewal 250 CPD hours during a period of 5 years in accordance with the CPD Guideline are required.

Criteria

Criteria for APEC Engineer in Japan

APEC Engineer Agreement, it is state that the Authorized Members shall establish and maintain a benchmark competence standard. In order to respond the agreement, basic criteria of APEC Engineer Registration in Japan are defined as follows.
A professional engineer who wish to be registered as APEC Engineer must;
- have completed an accredited or recognized engineering education program, or recognized to be equivalent to an engineer who meets the preceding requirement; and
- have demonstrated the professional engineering competence for independent practice as provided in the Professional Engineer Competency Profile, Japan, and hold effective registration as a professional engineer, Japan; and
- have gained a minimum of seven- years practical experience since graduation; and
- have spent at least two years in responsible charge of significant engineering works; and
- have maintained his/her continuing professional development at a satisfactory level.

In addition, all practitioners seeking registration as APEC Engineers must also agree to;

- observe the Codes of Ethics for Professional Engineers, Japan formulated by IPEJ and the codes of professional conduct of any jurisdiction within which he/she is practicing.;
- be individually accountable to his/her actions.

Each practitioner registered as APEC Engineer shall be identified with one or more recognized engineering disciplines, selected from the list approved by the Japan APEC Monitoring Committee, in which that practitioner has been assessed as being eligible for independent practice.
