Women at work in Japan - from a personal point of view

Born in Craiova, Romania, I graduated a six year curriculum at the University of Architecture and Urban Planning “Ion Mincu” in Bucharest and worked at an architecture studio for about one year before deciding to pursue a master course in architectural history at Chiba University in Japan.
After the completion of the course I began my working experience in Japan. At first, I did not know what to expect from what I thought would be a man only working place. I had read many articles in which Japanese working society was depicted as rigid, ruled by men unwilling to accept a woman’s point of view.
But working and living in Japan has brought me a not only a better understanding of a wide range of cultural differences, but also the working code of conduct that the Japanese people abide by. To my great satisfaction, women are starting to be treated equally in what until now one might have considered a “men only” field of work: architecture. Although there is still room for improvement, as a foreign woman, being able to rent an apartment, make a bank account, work in the same circumstances and for the same benefits as my male co-workers shows that Japan is open for global development and gender equality.
I am a strong supporter of equality between genders and I think that in Japan women are becoming more and more involved in high-responsibility work fields, showing tenacity, will power and that they are capable of being both mothers and successful career women at the same time.
Having understood a little bit of how the Japanese society is evolving gave me confidence that I will be able to continue working to fulfill my personal expectations.
