While statistically women remain underrepresented in undergraduate engineering courses, at roughly 14% across all disciplines in Australian universities in 2011, government, industry and the universities themselves are beginning to focus strongly on encouraging women into the technical courses.
Indeed, there is actually now a great deal of positive discrimination ? scholarships and the like aimed exclusively at women ? to encourage women into engineering, to the extent that a company’s desire to show a ‘balanced’ intake of graduates almost makes it easier for female graduates to find a position at the graduate level, given that there are far fewer of us in the job market. However, it was noted that the proportion of unemployed female engineers (5.2%) was significantly higher than the rate for men (2.7%) during Australia’s engineering skills shortage.
In recent years, the main reason for the discrepancy between the numbers of men and women graduating from degrees in engineering is simply that far fewer women enrol into the undergraduate engineering degrees in the first place. A worrying trend noticed in Australian high schools is a steady fall in the number of girls taking STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) courses in high school. Both government and academics now highlight the need to encourage girls to take STEM courses in high school, particularly advanced mathematics, to ensure that doors remain open for them to move into technical courses at university if they so choose.
