Although I am still in the process of finishing my studies in the field of architecture, I have had the opportunity to work for an Anglo-French architecture office in the south of France during my Bachelors and Masters Degree. The office I worked for had two people in charge, a married couple. The French husband was the head architect of the practice while his British wife was in charge of all administrative and marketing issues. Out of the seven employees, two were men.
During my time there I definitely did not feel like there was a substantial disjunction between the men and women. No role was attributed according to gender; on the contrary, the role of project manager was conceded to employees in regards to their time constraints, their specialization in the field in addition to their past experiences on similar built projects.
In my case, I wasn't working as a fully-qualified architect as I had not yet graduated, but instead as a RIBA Part 1 architectural assistant. This did not mean that my days were spent standing idly by the photocopy machine or bringing the occasional cup of coffee for other architects. I was quickly given a handful of responsibilities which included drawing up details and plans for building planning applications and tender documentations. I worked on a number of important projects such as a five-star hotel in the ski resort of Courchevel, as well as numerous private villas and restaurants along the French Riviera.
Although my experience limits itself to this office - which is far from being a disastrous experience in matters of gender equality - it is still an ongoing and startling issue that today main head positions in this field are still in general occupied by men.
